Golden Retriever Uveitis

Golden Retrievers are at risk for a breed-related intraocular inflammation called Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis. This is a chronic, insidious inflammatory condition where the prognosis is much better if it is identified early in the process. If not identified early, blindness and painful glaucoma can occur later in life. This is a disease that is difficult to diagnose unless you are a veterinary ophthalmology specialist. Dr. Zarfoss recommends that all Golden Retrievers have an eye exam with a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology or DACVO) at ages 5 and 8 years, even if no ophthalmic problems are apparent.
